Build Authentic Self-Confidence

sparkleHow would you feel if someone you know and loved constantly talked to you this way?

“How could you do that?”

“You’re so stupid!”

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“You’re an idiot!”

“When will you learn?”

In my career consulting practice, I sometimes observe clients refer to THEMSELVES in these harsh ways. Paradoxically, I’ve noticed the same clients rarely apply such harsh judgment to others. They are characteristically thoughtful and kind people who have compassion for others but “not-so-much” for themselves.  Selecting a career path and looking for job requires presenting the best version of yourself to others. It is critical to exude authentic confidence. Harsh, negative self-talk erodes self-esteem and confidence.

A remedy for negative self-talk is to apply the Golden Rule to yourself first and then to others. Talk to yourself as if you were talking to a very good friend, someone you love and respect. And while you’re being kind to yourself, forgive yourself for being human and making a mistake or two along the way.
